The antique crucifix on this Irish Catholic rosary features abundant Celtic symbolism* in front and back, and is 2" long. This Irish cross is from "Penal Times" in Ireland, 1540-1731 when its elongated form lent itself to be easily concealed within the hand during times of religious persecution.
The large, vintage rosary center features shamrocks on the sides, which carry a symbolism of their own**, and the center reads in Latin "Mater Dei - Ora Pro Nobis" (Mother of God - Pray For Us).
The lovely medal portrays the infant Jesus with a radiant North Star shining upon Him. The words "Gloria Deo" are engraved in the front. In the back, a Jerusalem Cross*** with the word "Jerusalem" engraved in the center.
The beads are 8mm and 12mm Select Grade Natural Color Aventurine. They are a beautiful pastel green, very uniform in color and size, with great luster and silky to the touch.

Antique or Vintage Rosary
The crucifixes and centers in the Sacred Art Jewelry collection are true golden bronze and .925 sterling silver reproductions of authentic antique or vintage pieces from all over the world.
They are new, top quality castings that are hand crafted using the ancient lost wax method. This technique, employed by the Greeks and the Egyptians, is still used in fine jewelry and considered the best way to assure each medal is an exact replica of the original.
The pieces you will find may be Irish, French, Spanish, Russian, as well as Native American, Latin American or Philippine, etc. A great many different Christian cultures and nationalities are represented.
Traditional Chained Rosary Technique
At Sacred Art Jewelry, we prefer to use the traditional rosary making technique of using ring caps to prevent the chain links from opening. These metal ring bead caps provide a sort of a "fence" that supports the wire. It also provides a most elegant finish to the chained rosary.

Rosary Beads for Men
Of course, all the pieces in our collections are suitable for both men and women, in the end it is a matter of taste and preferences. Typically, men’s rosaries are characterized by more linear, less ornate designs. Women’s rosary parts are usually more decorated with elaborate scrolls, flowers, and the like.
Rosary Necklace
Can your rosary be worn as a necklace? Rosary beads have been worn around the neck by both men and women from different cultures for centuries, and indeed designed and created to be worn as jewellery. Whether right or wrong, who are we to judge? This has been made a topic of controversy in recent years, but it can be argued that ultimately what matters is the respect with which the object is treated, the intention, and the occasions for which it is worn.
*The crucifix has various symbols of the Passion: a hammer for the nails of the cross, a halo for the Crown of Thorns, a jug symbolizing the Last Supper, cords for binding which recall the scourging at the Pillar, the spear used at Calvary, a cock and pot which illustrates an early apocryphal legend relating to Judas, the betrayer, and a roasting cock which suddenly came to life and crowed, thus prophesying the Resurrection, three nails used for the crucifix. Small marks along the side of the corpus indicate a ladder, both used in the crucifixion and by which we ascend to heaven.
**The shamrock used in this Irish rosary centerpiece is a native species of clover in Ireland and symbol of all things Irish, one of the oldest Celtic symbols. A Catholic legend holds that St. Patrick used it’s three lobes as a device for teaching the Holy trinity. To the Druids who came before, it symbolized a similar “three in one” concept, the three dominions of earth, sky, and sea, the life cycles of humans, and the phases of the moon. In Celtic folklore, the Shamrock is a charm against evil, a belief that has carried over in the modern reliance in the four leafed clover as a good luck charm.
***The Jerusalem cross on the back of the medal on this Irish rosary, also known as Crusaders' cross or the "Five-fold Cross", is a heraldic cross or Christian symbol consisting of a large cross potent surrounded by four smaller Greek crosses, one in each quadrant. The symbolism of the five-fold cross is variously given as the Five Wounds of Christ, Christ and the four quarters of the world, Christ and the four evangelists.
Each of the metal pieces is a fine reproduction of an authentic antique or vintage artifact, hand cast
in the U.S. in sterling silver or solid bronze, using the lost wax
method.
Because it was cast from a genuine item, it retains all the
details and character of the unique piece.
